P&WC Pink Paper Plane Challenge
Pratt & Whitney Canada celebrated Women of Aviation Week by participating in the Pink Paper Plane Challenge to help raise awareness within our organisation and community as well as to celebrate the anniversary of the first female pilot and International Women’s Day. Management and P&WC Women’s Leadership committee were very supportive of this event and as a result we had a great turnout (91 men and 48 women launched paper airplanes). Pratt and the Women’s Leadership committee provided a large cake, coffee and tea for participants to enjoy as part of the celebration with a pink paper plane in the center of the cake. It looked great. We had the privilege of welcoming the Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute to assist us with this event. They kindly provided 4 volunteers to assist us with this event as witnesses and stewards. To assist us with time keeping we had a volunteer from Precision Aero and P&WC. We held a briefing in one of the empty class rooms with all the volunteers to go over the rules and answer any question.
Upon entering venue everyone was given a ticket and a Pink Paper plane template. The ticket was submitted to the steward and then each participant then proceeded to the designated station to fold their planes. We then had to ask them to leave the auditorium in order to begin the official taping of the event. They proceeded to the hall-way which is bracketed by security gates on one side and double doors on the other side. No one was allowed to leave this area. There was a recount of participant tickets as they re-entered the venue and directed to an area in the auditorium. Fifty participants to the left side of the room, fifty to the right and fifty to the center. Any new participants were then ticketed and given a plane to fold. As we got closer to the 12 pm we had to close the doors and turn away participants as there would not have been enough time to fold planes and we did not have enough stewards to accommodate any more participants. We were not sure of the level of participation and could only plan for what we estimated we would get. The plant manager gave a short speech. We used the internet clock to track the time and a loud speaker as our signal to release the planes. Once the signal was given and airplanes airplanes were released at 12 pm all officials proceeded to a separate room to count tickets (red for women/blue for men) and complete the forms. All participants enjoyed the cake, coffee and tea and afterwards all volunteers were taken on a tour of the engine shop floor.
