The sun was shining, the wind was light, the snow glistened on the mountains and the enthusiasm was contageous! Glacier Air and the BC Coast 99’s hosted another very successfull day that included introducing 77 girls and women ranging in age from 6 to 81 to flying in a small aircraft for the first time!
The BC Coast 99’s were on hand to answer questions, represent and promote women flying, encourage, set an example and mentor girls of all ages, discuss sholarship opportunites and fly aircraft for the event. They brough books, magazines and lots of stories to share with everone!
Four guest speakers highlighed very different sectors of aviation and career paths. We began with Glenne Campbell showing photos and telling stories about the unique Rutan VariEze aircraft she helped her late husband build and fly around North America in the late 70’s. Angie Tanton gave an excellent presentation on her flying career which included flight training, flying for the UN overseas to flying for Transport Canada conducting aerial survallence. Donna Flynn gave a presentation on what it’s like to be an Air Show Boss and Wendy Boyes talked about learning to fly on ski’s and floats, becoming an AME and working for Transport Canada.
The local Squamish Air Cadets were also on site with an information booth and assisted with escorting passengers to aircraft and anything else we needed!
Pilots included Darcie and Katie taking turns flying a Cessna 172, Dave flew his Cessna 172, Cynthia flew her Cessna 182 and Akshay and Colette took turns flying a Cessna 206. Togther they made 25 flights, flew 80 passengers all safely and without incident and sparked on interest in aviation in all of them! So far 4 gals have signed up for an introductory flight lesson with Glacier Air!
It was a very successful day and fun was had by all!
