Meeting the Aviation with Bees

Meeting the Aviation with Bees

In line with the spirit of the Women of Aviation Week Activities, TEI has organized the “Model Plane Contest” on March 8th, 2018. We have worked with Eskisehir Provincial Directorate of National Education for the selection of the female students and we have identified 18 high schools together.

In this extent we have gathered 36 female students in groups of two from 18 different high schools to build the model planes and fly them. The contest took place in two categories:
o The best model plane (Bee) to be built in the specified time
o The longest flight

The activity took place in Sabiha Gokcen Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi. This school took its name after the world’s first Female military pilot Sabiha Gokcen. It was our intention to realize the contest and commemorate Sabiha Gokcen at the same time.
Our aim was to inform female high school students of Eskisehir about the aviation sector and raise their awareness about the female roles in the sector.
At 9:15 a.m. the contest has started, each school participated in the contest with two female students and one female teacher. Also each group had one assistant from Women In Engineering Affinity Group.
The students had 1,5 hour for the model plane building. After the completion of the model building the jury consisting of 5 judges reviewed each school’s plane and gave scores.
The “Beyhan – Rıfat Çıkılıoğlu” team got the highest score and was selected as the winner.
Then each school flew their model planes and judges timed each flight. “Sabiha Gökçen Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi” flew their model for the longest time and became the winner in this category.
The winner received their tablet computers from the judges and all the participants (the students, the teachers and the guests) received the pink backpacks as a thank you from TEI for their participation.
The activity was very fruitful; the students were very happy to participate in this exiting activity. They had a very good time and in parallel they were informed about the WOAW.
On 10th of March one of the female engineer of our company attended to conference organized at Sabiha Gökçen Anodolu Lisesi for the female students. She gave a speech about the aviation and aerospace engines and shared her experiences with the participants.
