Gender Balance in Aviation Sector
Ozyegin University, School of Aviation is proud to organize its second activity this year at Cekmekoy Campus regarding the Women of Aviation Week Celebration. Last year’s event “Pink Paper Challenge” was rewarded with the best video award and after setting up a brand new simulation in campus, this year we decided to try something new.
We wanted our women students and staff to be one of the firsts to fly in this simulation center. Flight Simulator has an exact the same cockpit configuration with B737-800 aircraft type. We started our events with a seminar about “Gender Balance in Aviation” and we held a discussion with our guests. Our Captain Pilot M. Bulent Aksum was the moderator of the seminar. After that he made a presentation about the phases of flight and answered the questions of women who attended. They were very interested with the aviation industry and flying an aircraft. We are hoping to change their life by inspiring them to involve in aviation sector. After that we chose 10 lucky women to fly in OzU Flight Simulation Center by drawing of lots. Our technician was accompanying them and explaining the basics of a flight. They all seemed very happy and impressed after with the chance of using simulation. Some of them expressed that “I have to involve in Aviation either as a hobby or a working.”
Women are facing a lot of challenges in work life in Turkey and our event aimed to encourage them and draw attention to problems of gender inequality in Aviation.
We finalized our event with a Pink Paper Plane Challenge in garden of our University and let Paper Planes fly through the air.
